Swedish Import Customs Requirements

Customs Considerations, VAT and Prohibited Items

VAT SWEDEN

When arranging shipping from Sweden to the UK, importation firms should be aware of HMRC’s requirements for VAT declarations to be made. We can help with this if you are not well-versed in the technicalities involved. Swedish VAT is known as “Moms” (Mervärdesomsättningsskatt). As Sweden is an EU member state its VAT rules align with the rest of the trading bloc. However, there might be distinct differences in the Swedish government’s application of VAT to different types of goods. The standard VAT rate in Sweden is 25%, which is slightly higher than the rates in many EU countries.

Restrictions

Some classes of goods face tighter controls than others. In Sweden, you may need special permissions to trade in any of the following goods:

Alcoholic Beverages: Specific limitations and excise duties on the export and import of Swedish alcoholic beverages, such as Aquavit and other traditional spirits, are in place.
Fish and Seafood Products: Due to Sweden’s extensive coastlines and fishing industry, there are particular regulations on the export and import of fish and seafood, especially for species under conservation.
Wood and Timber Products: Given Sweden’s large forestry sector, restrictions exist to control the export of wood and timber products to ensure sustainable forestry practices.
Pharmaceuticals and Controlled Substances: Tight regulations on the import and export of certain medications, particularly controlled narcotics, necessitate proper authorisation.
Cultural and Historical Objects: Strict rules cover the export of Swedish artefacts, including Viking relics, Sami handicrafts and antique furniture.

EORI Number Sweden

You will need an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number) for the UK and any EU country you ship to and from alongside a range of other customs requirements. See our blog on what is an EORI Number? for more information.

Remember, too, that simply registering with HMRC as an importer of goods from Swedenwill not be sufficient – on its own – to be able to use Swedish suppliers.
